Born
in Toronto and raised in Thunder Bay, ON, Michael Wright returned to
Southern Ontario in 1978 to attend Conestoga College in
Kitchener. CKCO-TV became his initial training ground where he operated all
technical functions; camera, audio, telecine, video and VTR. After
graduation, Michael moved to Toronto to work at HUCHM Productions
as an editor, where multiple technical skills opened doors for
opportunities to shoot EFP, floor direct and switch mobile and studio
productions.
In 1985, after editing a video for a proposed cable station called "Action Canada Sports Network", Michael went to work for the renamed TSN as Technical Director, and switched the premiere episodes of Sportsdesk, Sportsweek, Canadian College Report, Soccer News and more.
1987 took Michael into a
new field. Working for ADX Media Services, Michael produced
and directed radio and television commercial campaigns for the Weston
family of businesses; Loblaws, The SuperCentre, ValueMart, Weston
Bakeries, and President's Choice.
TVOntario then
provided many opportunities for a multi-skilled technician.
Initially
hired as a staff Technical Director, Michael worked as a switcher, lighting director, video operator and EFP cameraman.
Documentary shooting for TVOntario and TVO/NHK co-productions took
Michael across Ontario and down to Florida to follow the Monarch
Butterfly migration, as well as into countless laboratories and
operating rooms, offices and living rooms. Aerial photography from
helicopters and small engine planes added to the excitement of shooting.
A promotion to Technical Producer at TVO allowed Michael to be part of the planning, design and operation of several studio facilities and a TV mobile. From there came promotions to Supervisor of Studio and Mobile Operations, followed by Manager of Studio and Field Production, which had him oversee 5 studios, 1 mobile, all EFP operations, 2 audio mix facilities and a staff of 70.
These were turbulent years at TVO. Missing direct contact with production, Michael took his experience and launched Production Lines and his freelance career in 1996.
Managing technical
facilities, directing multi-camera events, crewing productions and
working on crews has kept Michael on the move.
Beijing, Torino, Athens, Munich, Palm
Springs, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Halifax, Edmonton, Quebec City,
Ottawa, Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler, Banff and Canmore have been just some of his destinations in the last
few years. Locally, Muskoka, Hamilton, Oshawa, Richmond Hill, Markham,
Mississauga and Toronto have served as home base.
When not on the road with television production, Michael spends his time in the fields pursuing landscape and nature photography. And that's another business.
